Patterned cloth seats used to be everywhere, from the Yugo all the way up to Porsche 911's and the Mercedes E Class. Why did they stop making patterned seats?
Personally, I think it disappeared partly due to increasing numbers of people ordering leather, and partly due to patterned cloth seats being more expensive to produce than boring all-black cloth seats.
But surely I’m not the only person who prefers patterned fabric seats over single-color leather seats. Look at the interior of this 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 below.
Now look at the interior of another 1980's Porsche 911, this time with leather.
Now, its still a very nice interior. But doesn’t it look so much more airy and less cave-like with the pinstriped fabric seats?
Patterned seats can also improve the a mbience of even the most horrible of interiors. Check out the interior of this Yugo.
Its still not a particularly nice interior, but those seats can at least distract you from how bad the rest of the interior is.
As far as I’m aware (correct me if I’m wrong) , the only car on sale today with patterned cloth seats is the VW Golf GTI. Will any other car manufacturers bring them back? Possibly. Now that they’re out of fashion, they might make a comeback.
Lets just hope they don’t go the way of the whitewall tyre.

My sister’s Rogue has some pretty cool seats. It’s blue on the outside, but the seats are a light gray cloth with light grey and light blue stripes.

The Volvo V60 is also available with patterned cloth seats.
I love them, and wish they'd make a comeback. I've said over and over again, the first manufacturer that will sell me a new crew cab pickup truck, with two plaid bench seats, gets my money.

Love the Volvo V60 plaid seats. Interior looks great with those seats and wood trim.

Yeah they do! I sat in one at the Chicago Auto Show this year, and fell in love.
